The musical steelpan is now part of the indigenous sounds of the Steel Orchestra of Trinidad and Tobago. It is the only acoustic instrument created in the twentieth century, and was declared the National Instrument of Trinidad and Tobago in 1992.

Musical Range

The steel pan instrument ranges from very high in the tenor to very low in the bass. They are grouped into three (3) main groups. Frontline Pans, Mid Range and Background Pans.


FRONTLINE PANS

    Tenors.
The tenor pans are called first pans or lead pans because they play the leading melody or tune and are available in two ranges with notes arranging in circle of fifths.


    Double Tenors and Double Second Pans.
The double tenor pan also called the double lead is a pair of pans played by a single performer. This instrument expands the melody range of the tenor pan with the capability for melody and counter melody.

MIDDLE RANGE PANS I

Double Guitars (Layout Styles 1 and 2)
The Double Guitar pan consists of two pans. It has an average of 20 notes. The guitar pan was designed to support the melody played by the frontline by playing harmony parts in the music. They also play chords in a strumming style.

MIDDLE RANGE PANS II

Triple Cellos.
The Triple Cellos pan is a set of three pans. It has an average of 24 notes. The triple cellos pan also carry a counter melody voice and also is used to support lower portions of the harmony by strumming chordal accompaniment.


Four Cellos.
Their suggested tonal range name is the Baritone. The cello pan plays lower notes than the guitar pans. Their main roll is to support the melody of the front line pans, play counter melodies and play supporting harmonies. Sometimes they play chords in a strumming style.


MIDDLE RANGE PANS III

Quadrophonic Pans.
Usually called Quads or Quadros, they have the widest range in the orchestra. These pans are a section of instruments, which reinforce the melody of the frontline and provide harmony support lower portions of the harmony by strumming chordal accompaniment.

Six Bass Pans.
These instruments occupy the whole drum. They provide very low bass lines and accompanying harmonic foundation to the orchestra. With a total of 18 notes it provides the completed depth of the musical arrangement.

Tenor Base Pans (Style 1).
The tenor bass pan set is also referred to as the four bass. These carry high bass lines with an average of 24 notes. They are used to add clarity to the lower bass lines and also they are used to accompany lower middle pans with specific melodic lines. These have an average of 28 notes.

MINI PANS.

The Mini Pan is a popular pan for children as well as for adults. It can be used as a beginner pan and also provides excellent introduction to music theory. This instrument is sometimes bought for ornamental purposes.
